In today’s connected world, the boundaries of collaboration are no longer confined to the same room, city, or even coast. I've the privilege of working alongside Charlotte Martin, an incredibly talented artist and producer, on another one of her projects. Charlotte produced and recorded this song entirely from her home studio, hundreds of miles away in Los Angeles, while I handled the mixing and mastering from my studio in Baltimore.
The process is seamless. Charlotte meticulously records her sessions with care, capturing every nuance of her sound then sends me the Pro Tools sessions through the internet, and the journey begins.
The Flow
From the moment the sessions land in my inbox, it’s as if the distance between us melts away. Communication flows naturally—notes, feedback, and small adjustments travel back and forth, all without disrupting the creative energy.
While we aren’t sitting in the same room, that personal touch is still very present. When I dive into her sessions, I can feel the intention behind her choices—the layers of vocals, the atmospheric textures, the intricacies of her piano playing. It’s like unfolding a gift, one mix decision at a time, knowing each choice will resonate deeply with the artist who trusted me to bring their vision to life.
The Beauty
What’s incredible is how much of a difference this kind of remote workflow makes for Charlotte's busy schedule. There are no scheduling conflicts. Charlotte can work at her own pace, crafting the songs until they feel just right before sending them my way. And I can do the same—taking the necessary time to get the mix and master exactly where it needs to be, without pressure or time constraints. It’s efficient without sacrificing creativity.
We’re able to focus entirely on the music. The convenience of technology enhances—not replaces—the artistry of the process.
